In Canada, we have just passed Victoria Day or La Journée nationale des patriotes which means a few things to Canadians.

1.   Time to get our gardens in order
2.  We can finally put away our mittens and tuques because it will not snow anytime soon
3.  The Canadian Football League regular season will be starting in a month

For us  at Intelegia, it is time to begin to think about our Canadian Cities Online Marketing Index (CCOMI) that will be published this September.   If you  are an economic development officer representing a large Canadian city and currently thinking of launching a social media marketing strategy, you may want to make note of this blog post.

For the third consecutive year, Intelegia will be benchmarking how Canadian cities are using the web to promote their region for investment attraction purposes.   A particular emphasis is placed on how well cities are marketing themselves thanks to social media tools such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and YouTube just to name a few.

The 2010 Canadian Cities Online Marketing Index saw the emergence of the Edmonton Economic Development Corporation taking top spot in the index along with the solid performances of the Greater Halifax Partnership, Hamilton Economic Development, Ottawa Centre for Research and Innovation and London Economic Development Corporation.    This year, we are anxious to see if:

  • There will be a city that will appear out of nowhere to take first place
  • Large cities such as Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal  have made a coherent effort to put themselves on social media for marketing purposes.
  • Cities have become more innovative when it comes to using new Web 2.0 tools

We will be also keeping an eye on smaller cities that are using social media for economic  development initiatives.    If you know of a Canadian city that is doing something innovative when it comes to Facebook, LinkedIn or YouTube, send us a tweet @citweetz or @intelegia.
